The original homestead · Moruga
"This is Trinidad! True freedom fighters, resilient, with a strong sense of self-determination."
Battle-worn former slaves toiled on the plantations of Georgia, Maryland, Virginia and South Carolina, and they survived. They also survived the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the brutality of slavery, and the War of 1812, fighting on the side of the British against their former masters.
They arrived in Trinidad around 1815 as payment for their service. The pain still lingered, but they pushed past it and stood up like the Gru Gru Bef tree. This is Trinidad. True freedom fighters, resilient and with a strong sense of self-determination: a new world, but carrying the soul of mother Africa with them. Soon enough they built something defined by hope and hard-earned resilience, rising from dismay to form a new reality. No truer test of will. No grander show of the African spirit. These were the pioneers, the conquerors.
Today, they are survived by descendants who have inherited an efficacious mix of these characteristics and still live in areas such as Fifth Company, Sixth Company, and St Mary’s Village, Moruga.
Daily life in Trinidad
Historians have agreed that the "Merikins", as the entire group was called, constructed and settled in villages named after the companies in which they fought. Social life was also built around a similar army-type hierarchy under the command of sergeants, at least, in the early days. They formed a tight-knit community bond, often practicing African traditions such as the "Gayap" system of cooperative tasks to construct homes, engage in farming, and even for weddings and burials.
Vintage Oaks Hideaway
VOH is a family-run business on 18 acres of the original land, run by descendants of the Merikins, most of whom still live in Fifth Company Village on another 16 acres granted by the Queen.

“Vintage Oaks is a lovely spot in the south of Trinidad! I thoroughly enjoyed the pool and the overall vibe while staying there. Not only was it a private, cozy spot, but we also celebrated a birthday there and the event decor and atmosphere was amazing! 10/10 would recommend!”
